Mater Misericordiae Hospital (MMH) is located in Gidel, Region of Southern Kordofan. Gidel is at about 20 km from Kauda, a  main center where an air strip is available and from where all traveling to Gidel is made possible. All NGO’s serving the Nuba people have their offices in Kauda and a discrete comercial place is now flourishing especially during the dry season when traveling from Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan Province, is made possible.

This Region, because of its “cushion” geographical position between North and South Sudan, suffered immensely the horrors of the war. Throughout history the Nuba people were raided as slaves by the Northern slave traders and considered up to today as not worthy more than that. In many ways development of this region has been blocked and its peoples prevented from education or any possibility to improve their standards of living. During the long period of war between North and South their only refuge and protection were the mountains surrounding this land; there they found hiding places to survive raids and bombardments and in this way survival was what mattered most.

Because of this situation and already 2 years away from the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, there are no professionals in this zone. There are no builders or carpenters, electricians or mechanics, no Nurses or Doctors.  All qualified Personnel must be contracted from abroad.

With this Project, the MMH, about to start its activities, intends to make an effort of initiating young and capable Nuba Girls to the vocation of Nursing. Because of their low standard of education and lack of Nursing Training Schools in this area, we hope to meet some of the needs for skilled Nursing Personnel, by training them locally and therefore working at capacity building for the Nuba region. This will offer us the possibility also of identifying talented and intelligent individuals for a future sponsorship to credible Training Institutions within Sudan or in the neighboring countries.

We believe that a two month intensive training will be sufficient to be able to initiate the candidates in the normal hospital routine of work and patient care. The program of training will include not only practical aspects  but also professional Christian ethics, and a comprehensive approach to the needs of the patients and to Nursing care. The training will be carried out by qualified Registered Nurses working in this Hospital and will be divided in class teaching and practical work with patients. In this way we believe it will become cost effective and enable the candidates to have an elbow to elbow relationship with their tutors during their clinical/practical hours.
